APPLE PIPPIN ATMARK

Apple's multimedia machine

Apple Atmark

Bandai Atworld (Japanese)

This console began it's life in 1993 as a handheld device, but after multiple revisions ended up as a console. There was a big stink in the early 90's about a home "multimedia" device that could be a game system that doubled as an internet box (similar to web TV but with games.) Commodore, 3DO, and CDI all tried to market their machines with this approach. At the time the internet was still a new thing and a decent computer could cost you over $3000. The idea behind this thing was a low end games console capable of running MAC software that could also be used to access the internet from your TV.

The problem was it was too little, too late. At the time computer technology began to advance by leaps and bounds in a very short period of time (which is still going on today.) By the time the console hit the store shelves in 96 it was already totally outdated. By 1996 56k modems had become cheap enough for the greater public to begin enjoying the internet (the Atmark came standard with a 14.4k modem.) Compatible with a lot of MAC software of the period, like Doom, Decent, Duke Nuk'em 3D, as well as titles released specifically for this system. But you just could not effectively market 1993 technology to a 1996 audience. By 1997 the machine was dead. Marketed in Japan by Bandai, who had a much cooler black console called the "Atworld." . There is a black American Atmark which is very rare.
